While summer is a good time to free oneself and indulge in its festivities, it’s also a time when we need to pay some extra attention to our health & hygiene, and our food & water intake. The mercury is soaring, the mangoes are ripening, and the swimming pools are beckoning. Yes, summer is upon us in all its warmth and brightness. Many water borne diseases find their way into our system leaving us fatigued and at times also ill.

So here is a compilation of some simple summer tips, which will help you beat the heat, and keep you fit & healthy and ensure you enjoy the season.

  • Water contamination is high in the summer, so ensure you drink water that comes from a trusted source.
  • Drink 8 to10 glasses of water every day. You can start your day by drinking at least two glasses of water in the morning and then at regular intervals of 1-2 hours throughout the day. This will help you stay hydrated. {Read 10 benefits of drinking lots of water}
  • Make lime juice, fresh fruit juices and fresh salads a part of your every day food intake.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before you have any food.
  • Maintain hygiene especially while eating outside. Do not eat at places where you suspect the refrigeration systems are poor. This could lead to Salamonella Typhi (a form of typhoid).
  • Avoid roadside food and items that are spicy, fried, oily or very salty.
  • Avoid caffeinated or carbonated beverages, alcoholic beverages, and drinks high in sugar content.
  • Also, avoid excessive intake of sugar cane juice, as it could cause jaundice.
  • Remember that your body takes time to acclimatize between the air-conditioned coolness of your office and the scorching heat outside. When you step out of office, stand in the shade for a few minutes before exposing yourself to the high temperature.
  • Ensure you listen to your body and rest when you need to.

Add these simple tips to your daily routine and stay fresh, healthy and cool through the summer.
